Festival X TAI-WAN? – Charm of Formosa

Location

One of the most significant orchestras in Taiwan, Kaohsiung Traditional Orchestra Taiwan, presents their program that combines internationally renown classical works with traditional Taiwanese melodies. This concert features a unique version of Jean Sibelius' Finlandia as adapted to an Asian orchestra, with Mikkeli Festival Choir performing the choral parts. Visiting conductor for this concert is Ho-Chung Yeh and as soloist performing will be world-famous American violinist Rachel Barton Pine. Pine is known for being the first American and the youngest contestant ever to win the international J.S. Bach violin contest in Leipzig in 1992. She's also won awards in the Paganini contest in Genoa and in the Queen Elisabeth contest in Brussels. Pine has performed with world's leading orchestras such as Chicago, Vienna and Philadelphia symphony orchestras and she's also known for her work in campaigning for diversity in classical music. In this concert Pine will be performing one of the most well-known concertos in China, Zhan-Hao Hen's and Gang Chen's The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto, which intertwines traditional Chinese myths with Western symphonic traditions. Bring the concert to conclusion is Nai-Chung Kuan's Charm of Formosa, which celebrates the cultural diversity and natural beauty of Taiwan. This composition transports the listener into historical Formosa with its gorgeous natural vistas and vibrant cities. Tickets to this concert are sold at lippu.fi.
